Can you believe it? We are nearly half way through 2010!! While wintry blasts swirl around outside and dark clouds gather overhead it is that time again to curl up on the sofa or in your favouritearm chair in the warm indoors and read a good book. It is not hard to satisfyyour wants -we are in a state of perpetual excitement as yet more amazing and satisfying reads come into our little literary enterprise.
First of all though you will be delighted to know that one of our all time favouritesOld Hu-Huwritten by Kyle Mewburnand illustrated Rachel Driscoll has recently topped the NZ Post Children’s Book Awards. This is one of the most beautifully illustrated and written books about bereavement that you could come across. While it is a picture book for the very young, we often sell it to adults grieving the loss of a loved one. Every home should have it. The children’s choice award went to TheWonky Donkeywhich has a CD written by Craig Smith and illustrated by Katz Cowley. This book sells by the dozen to preschoolers and new entrant children everywhere. “Not Just for Kids”is a CD also written and performed by Craig Smith with 20% of the proceeds going to charities that help kidsand families. Craig grew up in Queenstown where his Mum brought up six children and though theynever went without much, its safe to say that they sure needed a sense of humourgrowing up in their state house. Our day is never complete without some baby buggy coming through the door headingfor the children’s area with parent attached!!.
Once a teacher, always a teacher means that Queen Bee loves conversations with those who teach our children. Her old advisory skills are never far away as she shares the joys and tribulations of those who work so hard to educate our young people. So when Jim Hendersonphoned to say he has another book about to be released she was quick to seize the chance to launchit in Feilding. So Poppies invites you to a special launch on Saturday morning 19 June at 11am to hear Jim Henderson read from his latest book. Jim farmed organically at Whangaehu, south of Whanganuifor 17 years and he brings us the third exciting kiwi adventure about Flossie the sheep dog and his exploits with Cracker Jim.
Our very special friend and author, Maggie Hamilton of Sydney, whose parents live in PalmerstonNorth, has just released her sequel to What’s happening to our girls?called What’s happening to our boys? You may recall Maggie came and spoke to us in store about her first book which many parents, teachers and school principals picked up as a result of her visit in 2008. These are vital books for anyone involved in raising children or working with children and teenagers today.
In May Queen Bee flitted off to Rotoruafor a few days as WH was presenting a paper on climate change at a conference there. Did she have a ball? She had first class treatment from a number of shop owners in a very friendly town. In particular, she happened upon Goodingsa superb clothing and interiors shop, soon to include a tea shop compete with three tier stands and fine bone china. We now stock the most divine soaps so reasonably priced too, made from pure olive oil with the most heavenly of scents. Having sensitive skin QB usually avoids soap but she’s just loving the rose petal one that she’s trying at present. You will find them on the whatnot in the dell beside some beautiful teddy bear lavender sachets for slipping under your little one’s pillows for a good night’s sleep, also from Goodings;as are table runners made from fabric from Italy and France. Do let her acquaint you with some fabulous shops, a new boutique hotel and eateries in Rotoruashould you be travelling up that way.
Queen Bee will also be in attendance at the Bride & Groom Show in PalmerstonNorth on 13 June to be Mother of the Bride on the OretiVillage stand. Oretiis a fabulous resort on the southern shores of Lake Taupowhere she and WH often escape to for some R & R. We stock some special books for young couples about to be married, in particular a very useful bride’s wedding preparation journal.
Just in -another promising bestseller by Bill Bryson -At Home. Where the prizewinning A Short History
of Nearly Everythingwas a sweeping survey of Earth, the universe and everything, At Homeis an
inwards look at all human life through a domestic telescope. Because, as Bryson says, our homes aren't
refuges from history. They are where history begins and ends.
Wrap up warm and do come and see us! -Margaret, Tania, Raewyn, Kylie & Laura

John Locke was one of the greatest figures of the Enlightenment, whose assertion that reason is the key to knowledge changed the face of philosophy.
These writings on thought, ideas, perception, truth and language are some of the most influential in the history of Western thought.

Throughout history, some books have changed the world. They have transformed the way we see ourselves - and each other. They have inspired debate, dissent, war and revolution. They have enlightened, outraged, provoked and comforted. They have enriched lives - and destroyed them. Now Penguin brings you the works of the great thinkers, pioneers, radicals and visionaries whose ideas shook civilization and helped make us who we are.
