A rip-roaring tale of modern day piracy on the high seas and one of the longest and most dangerous pursuits in maritime history: the 21 day hunt for the Uruguayan fishing vessel suspected of poaching Patagonian Toothfish (aka Chilean Sea Bass) in Australian waters.
On 7 August 2003, the patrol boat Southern Supporter came upon the Uruguayan long-liner Viarsa in one of the most isolated places on earth - the Australian Fishing Zone near Heard Island, 2200 nautical miles southwest of Perth. The patrol suspected Viarsa was carrying an illegal catch of the endangered Patagonian Toothfish.
Thus began one of the longest and most dangerous pursuits in maritime history. The chase lasted 21 days and covered 3900 nautical miles through unimaginably rough seas. Hampered by snowstorms, icebergs, and the worst that the Roaring Forties could throw at them, the crews pushed their ships to the limit.
Why was this fish so important that it was ...

Since the seventeenth century, artists everywhere have been fascinated by yachts. Whether drawn to the vigour of ocean racing or the quiet nostalgia of cruising, they have found the yacht to be a rich and relentless artistic source. Truly international in scope,
Yachts on Canvas
reproduces the finest achievements of some of the world's leading maritime artists. Oils, watercolours, pen-and-ink, collages - these images span the various styles, times and nationalities of yachting. James Taylor's comprehensive text accompanies the compositions. In addition to providing a detailed study alongside each image, the author also presents a chronological history of the yacht. Bonham's, Christie's, Sotheby's, the New York Yacht Club, the Royal Cork Yacht Club and the Royal Yacht Squadron have all contributed towards the collation of these paintings, many of which have never before been published. The broad and diverse nature of this ...

Treason's Harbour #9

Paperback

Patrick O'Brian

The Jack Aubrey of
Treason’s Harbour
has a record of successes equal to that of the most brilliant of Nelson’s band of brothers, and he is no less formidable or decisive in action or strategy. But he is also wiser, kinder and gentler.
Much of the plot of
Treason’s Harbour
depends on intelligence and counter-intelligence, a field in which Aubrey’s friend Stephen Maturin excels. Through him we get a clear insight into the life and habits of the sea officers of Nelson’s time. There is plenty of action and excitement in this novel, but it is the atmosphere of a Malta crowded with senior officers waiting for news of what the French are up to, and wondering whether the war will end before their turn comes for prize money and fame, that is so freshly and vividly conveyed.
